Christopher Nolan’s latest film The Odyssey may have dominated conversations at its New York premiere, but one subtle fashion choice by the Oscar-winning director has sparked international attention beyond the movie itself.
Appearing on the red carpet in a classic black suit and white dress shirt, Nolan completed his look with a custom silk tie featuring an Ajrak-inspired pattern. The accessory was designed by New York-based Indian menswear designer Aahaan Tandon, who later confirmed the collaboration by sharing photographs from the premiere on social media.
Rather than serving as a simple fashion statement, the tie drew renewed interest in Ajrak, a centuries-old textile tradition celebrated for its intricate geometric patterns and rich natural colors. The craft has deep historical roots in Sindh, in present-day Pakistan, while related traditions have also been preserved by artisan communities in India’s Kutch region of Gujarat.

Created through a labor-intensive process involving hand-carved wooden blocks, natural dyes and multiple stages of printing and washing, authentic Ajrak textiles are widely regarded as symbols of craftsmanship passed down through generations. Historians and textile experts describe the fabric as both an artistic tradition and an important expression of regional cultural identity.
The designer’s announcement quickly gained traction across fashion and entertainment media, with many praising Nolan for introducing a traditional South Asian craft to one of Hollywood’s highest-profile red carpets.
The premiere itself gathered an ensemble cast featuring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, and Mia Goth. The film adapts Homer’s ancient Greek epic, following Odysseus on his long and perilous journey home after the Trojan War.

Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, who stars in The Odyssey, complemented her gold gown with handcrafted jewelry by renowned Indian luxury designer Sabyasachi. Her look included a multi-layer pearl choker accented with Polki diamonds, along with an 18-karat gold Bengal Tiger ring featuring diamonds and a sapphire centerpiece.
Together, Nolan’s Ajrak tie and Nyong’o’s jewelry highlighted how traditional South Asian craftsmanship continues to find a place on international stages, where heritage-inspired design increasingly resonates alongside contemporary fashion.
As The Odyssey begins its global theatrical run, the film is attracting attention not only for its star-studded cast and ambitious adaptation of classical literature, but also for the cultural stories reflected in the fashion choices made during its premiere.
