NEW YORK —

Verizon has secured a contract worth more than $1 billion with Google to provide dark fiber connectivity for the tech giant’s expanding network of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, marking one of the telecommunications company’s largest infrastructure agreements in recent years.

The announcement came during Verizon’s post-earnings conference call, where CEO Dan Schulman said the agreement reflects rapidly growing demand for high-capacity network infrastructure as major technology companies continue investing heavily in AI computing.

Beyond the Google agreement, Schulman revealed that Verizon expects to announce additional large-scale infrastructure contracts before the end of the year, with combined revenue potentially reaching multiple billions of dollars over the coming years.

AI Boom Drives New Infrastructure Spending

As AI models become increasingly complex, technology companies require vast amounts of computing power spread across multiple data centers. Those facilities must exchange enormous volumes of information in real time, making high-speed fiber connections increasingly critical.

Unlike conventional telecommunications services, dark fiber provides customers with unused fiber-optic strands that they can operate independently using their own networking equipment. This gives companies greater bandwidth, lower latency and more control over rapidly expanding AI workloads.

Google has been expanding its global data center footprint to support AI products, cloud computing services and next-generation machine learning systems. The new partnership with Verizon is expected to strengthen connectivity between these facilities as demand for AI infrastructure continues rising.

A Billion-Dollar Opportunity

Although Verizon did not disclose the full financial structure of the agreement, executives confirmed the contract exceeds $1 billion in value.

Schulman also indicated the company is negotiating additional infrastructure partnerships with other major customers.

“We have other deals that we expect to announce by year end that, taken together, are expected to be worth multiple billions of dollars in revenue over the next several years,” he said during the earnings call.

The comments suggest Verizon is positioning itself as a key infrastructure provider for the next phase of AI expansion rather than relying solely on its traditional wireless business.

Telecom Industry Finds New Growth Engine

The surge in artificial intelligence investment is creating fresh opportunities for telecommunications companies.

While cloud providers, semiconductor manufacturers and AI software developers have attracted most investor attention, network operators are increasingly benefiting from the enormous amount of data moving between AI facilities.

Every new hyperscale data center requires reliable fiber networks capable of transmitting massive datasets continuously with minimal delays.

Industry analysts say AI infrastructure spending is no longer limited to processors and servers. Fiber connectivity, power systems and networking equipment have become equally important components of modern AI ecosystems.

Google Continues AI Expansion

Google has accelerated investment across its AI ecosystem over the past two years, expanding both cloud infrastructure and specialized computing facilities.

The company’s growing portfolio of AI services—including generative AI models, enterprise cloud solutions and machine learning platforms—requires increasing amounts of interconnected computing capacity.

Building faster connections between data centers helps reduce processing delays while improving overall system performance for customers worldwide.

The Verizon partnership supports that long-term strategy by expanding network capacity through dedicated fiber infrastructure.
