Qantas Moves Closer to World’s Longest Commercial Flight After Airbus A350 Completes Historic 19-Hour Test

MELBOURNE, Australia —

A specially modified Airbus A350-1000ULR has completed its first nonstop journey from France to Australia, marking a significant milestone in Qantas’ ambitious Project Sunrise, which aims to launch the world’s longest commercial flights within the next two years.

The aircraft landed in Melbourne after flying approximately 17,000 kilometers (10,560 miles) from Airbus’ production facility in Toulouse, France. The nonstop trip lasted nearly 19 hours, serving as the aircraft’s first operational test before undergoing additional evaluation flights.

Rather than carrying paying passengers, the aircraft was flown to assess its performance, fuel efficiency and long-range capabilities ahead of its planned entry into commercial service.

A New Generation of Ultra-Long-Haul Travel

The aircraft involved in the trial is the Airbus A350-1000ULR (Ultra Long Range), a specially configured version of Airbus’ flagship long-haul jet.

Engineers equipped the aircraft with an additional 20,000-liter fuel tank, allowing it to travel significantly farther than standard A350 variants without refueling.

The successful nonstop journey represents one of the longest flights ever undertaken by an Airbus passenger aircraft and demonstrates the technology required for future ultra-long-haul operations.

Following its arrival in Melbourne, the aircraft is scheduled to complete another long-distance test flight before entering the next phase of certification.

Preparing for Project Sunrise

The test forms part of Qantas’ Project Sunrise, an initiative designed to connect Australia directly with destinations previously considered too distant for nonstop commercial service.

Once the fleet enters passenger operations, Qantas plans to launch direct flights linking:

Sydney – New York

Both routes are expected to take up to 22 hours, making them the longest scheduled commercial flights in the world.

The airline expects the new services to begin by late 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and aircraft deliveries.

Passenger Comfort Becomes a Priority

Operating flights lasting almost an entire day presents challenges beyond aircraft range.

Qantas has worked with medical researchers, aviation specialists and aircraft designers to improve passenger wellbeing during extremely long journeys.

The airline says cabin layouts will include dedicated wellness areas, redesigned lighting systems, improved air quality and spaces intended to encourage movement during flight.

These features are designed to reduce fatigue and help passengers better adapt to long periods in the air.

Ultra-long-haul flights have become one of aviation’s fastest-growing areas of innovation as airlines seek to eliminate stopovers and reduce total travel times.

Project Sunrise aims to extend those limits even further by introducing regular nonstop services lasting around 22 hours, a benchmark that would establish a new record for commercial aviation.

Industry analysts say the project could reshape long-distance travel by making nonstop intercontinental connections increasingly common over the coming decade.
