Spain has declared a national emergency after rapidly spreading wildfires swept across mountainous areas west of Madrid, forcing more than 19,000 residents to flee their homes as firefighters battled multiple blazes intensified by extreme heat, strong winds and prolonged drought.
Authorities said over 2,000 emergency personnel supported by at least 10 firefighting aircraft have been deployed, but efforts to contain the fires remain difficult as several major blazes continue to expand and threaten nearby communities.
Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said the scale of the disaster required a nationwide emergency response, while regional officials warned that the fires were moving closer together, increasing the risk of an even larger wildfire.

Three Major Fires Threaten Communities
Emergency officials confirmed that two major wildfires burning west of Madrid were at risk of merging with a third blaze in Ávila province, creating a significantly larger fire front.
Government representative Nicanor Sen said authorities were closely monitoring the situation as weather conditions continued to fuel the flames.
The affected region includes numerous residential communities and vacation homes owned by people living in Madrid.
Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso said at least 43 homes have already been destroyed, while thousands of additional properties remain under threat.
Residents were ordered to leave immediately as firefighters worked to prevent the flames from reaching more populated areas.

Second Consecutive Year of Severe Fire Season
Spain is experiencing another devastating wildfire season after suffering record fire damage in 2025.
Environment Minister Sara Aagesen said more than 29 major wildfires have already been recorded across the country in 2026.
The total area burned this year is already five times larger than the area destroyed during the same period last year, highlighting the increasing severity of wildfires across southern Europe.
Government officials say prolonged heatwaves, dry vegetation and strong winds have created ideal conditions for fires to spread rapidly.

The wildfire emergency is not limited to Spain.
Across Europe, large wildfires have already burned more land this year than the average annual total recorded over the past two decades.
Scientists say repeated heatwaves, prolonged drought and changing climate conditions have increased both the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.
Southern Europe has endured three consecutive heatwaves this year, placing additional pressure on emergency services and increasing wildfire risks across several countries.

International Support Arrives
As the fires intensified, neighboring countries began providing emergency assistance.
Greece dispatched two CL-415 firefighting aircraft to Spain to help contain fires in the Toledo region.
Meanwhile, Croatia also deployed a Canadair firefighting aircraft along with flight crews and military technical personnel to assist France in battling separate wildfire outbreaks.
European authorities say cross-border cooperation has become increasingly important as climate-related disasters affect multiple countries simultaneously.

Heatwave Impacts Agriculture and Energy
The extreme temperatures are creating challenges beyond wildfire response.
In France, weather forecasters expect another surge in temperatures after a brief cooling period, raising concerns about river temperatures used to cool nuclear power stations.
Operator EDF has already kept one reactor at the Golfech Nuclear Power Plant offline due to environmental restrictions linked to rising water temperatures.
